Circle left and join us for a night learning about the mathematics of dance! Professional contra caller Lindsey Dono and a speaker from the UW Department of Mathematics will give two talks and a dance demo for an extra special holiday edition of Nerd Nite Seattle.
Lindsey Dono: Gambol with the geeks: inside the nerdy world of contra dance
Contra is an American folk dance with more than three hundred years of history. Forty-nine US states currently feature a regularly occuring contra dance. In this talk, we’ll touch on cognitive psychology, matrices, classical mechanics, gender, music theory, and why contra dancing is the most efficient use of your time. We’ll conclude the talk with a live demo.*
Contra dance caller Lindsey Dono tours nationally teaching people how to walk in circles while counting to eight. By day, Lindsey conducts user experience research at a large tech company. In what little time remains, Lindsey can be found on a variety of social dance floors, hiking, camping, or initiating ill-advised baking experiments.
