Reprogramming Your Immune System Against Cancer

We are at the dawn of understanding how cancers evade our immune system. For the first time we are able to use this knowledge to design and reprogram immune systems that destroy tumors in patients after every other known therapy has failed. Join us as we try to understand the current science behind Cancer Immunotherapy and see why it was chosen as the scientific breakthrough of 2013 by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Seattle is at the forefront in this field with its unique collection of non-profits and biotechs dedicated to cancer immunotherapy, including probably the largest ever ‘series a funding’ for a biotech which occurred in 2013.
Dr. Semih Tareen, a virologist by training, uses viruses to reprogram immune systems. He has been a part of the Seattle cancer immunotherapy boom working for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for 6 years, a local biotech called Immune Design for 4 years, and he is now a senior scientist at Juno Therapeutics, a local startup biotech formed in 2013 based on technologies from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, from Seattle Children’s Hospital and from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Seattle is full of places with fascinating stories. Some are well known, others are almost forgotten. We’ll start by taking a quick look at a few of those places, like the huge Coney Island-like amusement park that was in West Seattle, the big casino that was in Leschi Park, and the other big amusement park that was in North Seattle, not far from the drive-in movie theatre off Aurora Avenue.
In this Nerd Nite talk, we’re going to focus on two interesting places that shaped Seattle’s history.
Ever wonder what that big concrete staircase looking thing is on the shore of Green Lake? And how did it get there? What was it used for? It’s a pretty interesting story – one that weaves in one of the all-time best rock bands, a legendary comedian, the start of Seattle’s Seafair tradition and a lost parking enforcement vehicle.
Did you know the Mariners weren’t Seattle’s first Major League Baseball team? Years before the M’s, Seattle sports fans went down to the Rainier Valley for baseball games, and the site where Seattle had some of its best baseball is now a hardware store. It’s also where Elvis performed. And Jimi Hendrix, who watched Elvis’ show, performed there too. Nerd out with stories of the old ballpark, details of what led to its demise, and learn a story that will surprise your non-native friends.
