Love is a burning thing | Amanda Green

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have affected the sexual health and behaviors of humans for as long as they’ve been practicing (and boy have they been!). As with other communicable diseases, the carriage and infection patterns of STIs are constantly changing in response to our prophylactic, treatment and behavioral efforts. More than just a sex-ed primer: come learn about the current state of STI prevalence and inequity, the sexy and gritty details of STI transmission, and the new and interesting ways in which they affect our lives.

Amanda Green is a former parasitology and virology researcher, and current medical student at the University of Washington who is interested in adolescent medicine and infectious disease. She helped to organize and run the (now defunct) Seattle Rainbow Women’s Health Fair, contributed to the UW School of Medicine’s Sexpertise adjunct curriculum, and has spent time volunteering with HIV NGOs in Ghana and Kenya.

The Lifted Veil: Love, Ambition and Conspiracy in the Ottoman Harem | Michael Benavidez

The word “Harem” conjures a certain fanciful image in the western mind of beautiful girls in scantily clad outfits and days frittered away in a lifestyle of carefree luxury and hedonism. But just how accurately does this picture reflect a historical reality? How did one become a part of the Harem? And who, at the end of the day, truly ruled it? We will explore this question as it relates to the Imperial Harem of the Ottoman Empire, examining its structure, purpose and influence as a social institution across six centuries of the most expansive Muslim Empire the world has ever known.

Michael Benavidez is a casual student of history and aspiring layabout who enjoys examining the underlying realities behind popular historical images and reading about societies that tend to get glossed over in the western tradition when it comes to history. Always having an intellectual curiosity for how the conflicts and struggles today possess an echo of events now centuries passed, his passion for history has remain undeterred by the practicality of a business degree and a far less interesting day job. He lives in Kirkland where he means to get a blog about this stuff off the ground sometime in between learning programming and reading about ancient Greek wars.
